Upper Suriname & the interior
Where the river is the only road
Beyond Atjoni the road ends. From there everything goes by korjaal: the narrow wooden dugout canoes the Maroon communities have used on the Upper Suriname River for centuries. Between the rapids lie the villages — Pikin Slee, Botopasi, Futunakaba — and the river islands the lodges are built on.
This is the territory of the Saramaccan Maroons, descendants of enslaved Africans who settled in the interior in the eighteenth century and kept their own language, customs and woodcarving. You come here for the quiet, the rainforest and that culture. Danpaati, Anaula, Pingpe and Isadou are the lodges you explore it from.

Veelgestelde vragen
How do you reach the interior?
By bus from Paramaribo to Atjoni, about three hours including comfort stops, and from there two to two and a half hours upstream by korjaal. Some lodges can also be reached by domestic flight.
Which lodges are there?
Danpaati River Lodge, Anaula Nature Resort, Jungle Resort Pingpe and Isadou River Resort. They differ in comfort and character; our comparison page puts them side by side.
How many days do you need?
Three days is the minimum and feels short: two of them you are largely travelling. Four or five days leaves room for the walks, the villages and simply doing nothing by the river.
What is there to do?
Island, forest and village walks, evening boat trips with a chance of spotting caimans, swimming in the sula rapids, and for larger groups a cultural performance with traditional Maroon dances.
Is there power and internet?
Limited. Most lodges run on a generator that is on for part of the day; internet is scarce to non-existent. Bring a power bank and assume you will be out of reach for a while.
What should you bring?
A backpack rather than a suitcase, a torch, insect repellent, long sleeves and trousers for the evening, water shoes, sunscreen and cash for the bar and souvenirs.
