Upper Suriname and the interior
Where the river is the only way
Past Atjoni the road ends. From there, everything is done by canoe: the narrow wooden boats with which the Maroon communities have been sailing on the Upper Suriname River for centuries. Between the rapids are the villages — Pikin Slee, Botopasi, Futunakaba — and the river islands on which the lodges are located.
This is the area of the Saramaccan Maroons, descendants of enslaved Africans who settled in the interior in the eighteenth century and retained their own language, customs and woodcarving. You come there for the peace, the rainforest and that culture. Danpaati, Anaula, Pingpe, and Isadou are the lodges from where you will explore it.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get inland?
By bus from Paramaribo to Atjoni, about three hours including sanitary stops, and from there two to two and a half hours by canoe upstream. Some lodges are also accessible by domestic flight.
Which lodges are there?
Danpaati River Lodge, Anaula Nature Resort, Jungle Resort Pingpe and Isadou River Resort. They differ in comfort and atmosphere; They are next to each other on our comparison page.
How many days do you need?
Three days is the minimum and feels short: two of them you are largely on the road. Four or five days gives room for walks, the villages and just doing nothing by the river.
What do you do there?
Island, forest and village walks, evening boat trips where you can spot caimans, swimming in the sula rapids, and for larger groups a cultural performance with traditional marro dances.
Is there electricity and internet?
Limited. Most lodges run on a generator that is on for part of the day; There is hardly any internet. Take a power bank with you and assume that you will be unreachable for a while.
What do you take with you?
A backpack instead of a suitcase, flashlight, mosquito repellent, long sleeves and pants for the evening, water shoes, sunscreen and cash for the bar and souvenirs.
