Brownsberg & the reservoir
Rainforest at five hundred metres
Brownsberg Nature Park sits on a plateau more than five hundred metres above the Brokopondo Reservoir, roughly a two-hour drive from Paramaribo. From the edge you look out over an endless carpet of rainforest, with the lake glinting in the distance.
The park is one of the most accessible stretches of primary forest in the country. Trails lead to three waterfalls — Irene, Leo and Wittie — and with a bit of luck you will see howler monkeys, spider monkeys and toucans. The reservoir below was created in the 1960s by the Afobaka Dam; the dead tree trunks still standing in the water are a reminder of that.

Veelgestelde vragen
How long is the drive from Paramaribo?
About two hours, with the last stretch unpaved and steep. A four-wheel drive is not a luxury there; our tours use suitable vehicles.
Which waterfalls can you visit?
Irene Falls is the best known and most accessible, about a thirty-minute walk each way. Leo Falls and Wittie Falls lie deeper into the park and ask for more time and fitness.
Will you see wildlife?
You will almost always hear howler monkeys; seeing them is a matter of luck and silence. Spider monkeys, toucans and countless bird species are regular. Go early — between six and nine the chances are best.
What is the Brokopondo Reservoir?
One of the largest reservoirs in the world, built in the 1960s to power the bauxite industry. Villages disappeared under water; their inhabitants were moved to the transmigration villages.
Can you stay overnight?
Yes. There are simple lodges in the park, and a two-day tour with an overnight stay on Ston Island in the reservoir. That is worth doing: early in the morning the park is at its best.
What should you bring?
Closed walking shoes, rain gear, insect repellent, plenty of water and swimwear for under the waterfall. It is cooler up there than in the city, especially in the morning.
