Suriname’s east coast begins where the Marowijne river draws the border with French Guiana. This is the land of Albina and Moengo, of the indigenous villages of Galibi and Christiaankondre, and of the sandbanks where sea turtles come ashore to nest.
Further out than the interior along the Upper Suriname — and quieter for it. People come here for the calm, the indigenous culture and, if the season is right, for the turtles.

Frequently asked questions
When can you see sea turtles at Galibi?
During nesting season only. The three-day Myrysji tour then offers the chance to observe them. Outside that period the villages, the river and the nature remain — the turtles do not. Ask us about the current period before you book.
How do you travel to the east coast?
All three arrangements leave from Paramaribo and combine bus and boat. Travel time to the border region is about three hours, via Moengo and Albina. The Myrysji tour departs at 8.00 am from Torarica Resort, the French Guiana day trip at 7.30 am.
What does a trip to Galibi cost?
The French Guiana day trip costs € 135 per person. The three-day arrangement at Myrysji Lodge costs € 220 and the two-day stay at Urusji Lodge € 248. All three include transport, guide, accommodation and meals.
Do I need travel documents for French Guiana?
Yes. On the day trip you cross the Marowijne to Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, and with it a national border. Bring valid travel documents; ask us what applies in your case.
Is there a minimum group size?
The three-day Galibi Myrysji tour needs six people. The two-day stay at Urusji Lodge and the French Guiana day trip need four. Travelling with a smaller party? Let us know and we will look at the next departure date.
Can I see turtles closer to Paramaribo?
Yes, at Braamspunt at the mouth of the Suriname river. Those tours are shorter and without an overnight stay. Our article on turtles in Suriname explains where and when.
