What is the Boni Trail?
The Boni Trail is an interactive forest walk at Plantation Frederiksdorp about Suriname's history of slavery. The route combines nature, symbolism and history and passes art objects, huts and historical objects.
Who was Boni?
Boni (circa 1730–1793) was the leader of the Aluku, also known as the Boni Maroons: a community of people who had escaped enslavement in Suriname. He waged a guerrilla war against Dutch colonial troops for many years and was killed in 1793. (Source: Wikipedia)
How does the walk begin?
The tour starts symbolically with a boat crossing through “The Door of No Return”, after which the walking route across the plantation follows.
What does the Boni Trail cost?
Visitors aged 13 and over pay € 5.00 per person; children aged 12 and under pay € 2.50 per person.
Are children welcome?
Yes, there is a separate child rate for ages 12 and under. Please note that some parts of the walk are confronting and intense.
What should I bring or wear?
Light clothing and sturdy shoes for the forest, insect repellent against mosquitoes and plenty of drinking water.
