Description
This museum impressively showcases the transatlantic slave trade in its entirety, from the capture in Africa, the journey through the Middle Passage and life in the Caribbean and the Americas. We invite our guests to imagine not only the trauma and pain enslaved Africans have experienced, but also the courage, resilience and hope to survive this brutal period in history.
Museum Kurá Hulanda further displays an extensive collection of artifacts from continental Africa, showcasing the dynamic vitality and great empires of West Africa. With the exhibition of West African Kingdoms, we want to debunk the negative image of an impoverished Africa in order to showcase the depth of African history, beauty and cultural contributions to human civilization.

Initiated and developed by Jacob Gelt Dekker, the Museum Kurá Hulanda opened its doors in April 1999. Museum Kurá Hulanda is located right on the harbor of the city center of Willemstad, where Dutch entrepreneurs once traded and sailed through with enslaved Africans, along with other “commercial goods.” This museum impressively shows the transatlantic slave trade in its entirety, from the capture of slaves in Africa through the Middle Passage and the move to the New World.
Museum Kurá Hulanda further displays a vast collection of artifacts from continental Africa, showcasing the dynamic vitality and great empires of West Africa, which is in the largest collection of African artifacts in the Caribbean. The museum has recently expanded its emphasis to include other non-Western cultures of the world, and now houses spectacular exhibits of the fertile Crest region of the Middle East, Pre-Columbian gold of Colombia, Maroon cultures of Suriname, Africans in Brazil, Santeria/Voodoo, and much more.
Museum Kurá Hulanda shows that our African and diverse cultural heritage has influenced Curaçao and Caribbean societies to this day.
