2-Day Nickerie Tour with Boat Trip in Bigipan (Suriname)

During the tour we will drive through the districts of Saramacca and Coronie with our final stop in Nickerie. The first stop we make is in Groningen, Saramacca, where the locals live from cattle breeding and growing fruits and vegetables.

The next stop is Coronie, where locals used to earn their income by growing coconuts. Today, there is only a small group left in this district because life became difficult and fewer people were interested in processing coconuts. Most of them came to Paramaribo for a better future.

From the coconut culture we end up with the rice culture in Nickerie. The capital of Nickerie is Nieuw Nickerie and has about 30,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in Suriname. The Bigipan Nature Reserve is located in Nickerie and is the perfect place for bird and nature lovers. The nature reserve is known as a breeding area for many bird species, including the Red Ibis.

From the bike rental company you cycle to the Plattebrug, where you board a wooden tent boat to Meerzorg. From Meerzorg you cycle via the East-West connection to Peperpot. This plantation was established in the early 19th century by the Jansen family as a coffee and cocoa plantation. The factory complex has two plantation houses, a coffee barn and a coffee and cocoa factory. Production continued until 1996. There is also a kampong (settlement) with workers’ houses inhabited by Javanese, although people have found work elsewhere. You can still recognize the coffee and cocoa trees, which today are covered with bromeliads, orchids, and creepers, and the animals have reclaimed the area. Peperpot is popular with bird lovers, but if you’re lucky, you may also encounter tamarins, capuchin monkeys, and sapakaras (giant lizards) on one of the trails that have been laid out right through the plantation.
