Discover Suriname: Your Tropical Adventure in South America
Welcome to Suriname, a hidden gem on the north coast of South America where adventure meets authenticity. This fascinating republic, with its vibrant capital Paramaribo as its cultural heart, offers travelers a unique experience found nowhere else in the world.
A Rich Cultural Tapestry
What makes Suriname so special is its harmonious fusion of cultures. Dutch colonial influences from the past (from 1667 to independence in 1975) mention seamlessly with Javanese temples, Hindu traditions and African rhythms. This cultural diversity means that during one trip you can enjoy roti on a street corner, Chinese dim sum in Chinatown, and traditional Maroon music in the interior.
Although Dutch is the official language, everywhere you hear the melodious Sranan Tongo – the unifying language that brings all communities together. This linguistic richness makes every conversation a cultural voyage of discovery.
Safe Travel in Suriname
As a responsible traveler, you can explore Suriname safely by following some practical tips. Paramaribo is generally safe for tourists, but avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics. Some eastern areas such as Moengo and Albina, as well as along certain highways, require extra caution.
Travel tips for a carefree vacation:
- Preferably travel in groups, especially at night
- Stay in Paramaribo’s well-known entertainment areas after sunset
- Keep valuables safe in your accommodation
- Follow local advice on which areas are best to avoid
With a security score that surpasses many European countries and even the United States, you can explore this beautiful destination with confidence.

Be amazed by the warmth of the locals, the taste explosion of fusion cuisine, and the natural wonders that make this special republic so unforgettable.

Discover the hidden gem of South America! Suriname awaits you with its breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural diversity and unforgettable adventures. Whether you dream of mystical rainforest expeditions, historic exploration of Paramaribo, or experiencing a unique multicultural society – this guide will help you be optimally prepared to hit the road.
What do you need for your Suriname adventure?
Your Identity Papers
For your trip to this fascinating country, you need a valid Dutch passport. This is your entrance ticket to a world full of natural wonders and cultural treasures. Make sure your passport is still valid for at least six months upon departure.
Access to the Land
As a Dutch tourist, you pay an entrance fee upon arrival to enter Suriname. You can arrange this in advance through VFS Global (English website) or pay on the spot. Keep your receipt well – you will need it at the border control. This small amount opens the door to unforgettable experiences!
Financially Prepared for Adventure
Suriname has a mixed payment culture. In Paramaribo, you can often pay by debit or credit card, but once you explore the interior for your jungle adventures, cash becomes essential.
Our practical tips:
- Bring both cash and debit and credit cards
- Dutch debit cards work great at local ATMs
- For expeditions to the interior: stock up on cash in the capital
- Keep your bank’s block number in your phone for emergencies
- Activate your debit card for use outside Europe
Budget liberally for unexpected expenses – think extra nights if you fall in love with a destination or weather conditions change your plans.
Staying Connected in the Jungle
Your smartphone is your lifeline to civilization, but Suriname’s vast nature can be challenging for mobile connections.
Connectivity strategy:
- Check international rates with your Dutch provider
- Consider a foreign package for worry-free communication
- Purchase a tourist SIM card upon arrival at the airport for optimal local coverage
- Make sure your phone is simlock-free
- In remote jungle areas, range may be limited – plan accordingly!
Health & Wellness
Suriname’s health care system differs from Dutch standards. Although many specialists have had Dutch training, resources and personnel are sometimes limited.
Essential preparation:
- Get comprehensive travel insurance with repatriation coverage
- This investment protects you from unexpected medical expenses
- Before departure, consult your doctor about required vaccinations
Help Along the Way
Should you need assistance during your Surinamese adventure:
Emergency numbers:
- Police & Ambulance: 115
- Private Ambulance: 117
- Fire department: 110

Climate and seasons
Suriname’s climate: what to expect?
As a tourist to Suriname, you travel to a country where the tropical climate sets the pace. Throughout the year you will experience warm temperatures between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, combined with high humidity that provides that typical tropical feeling. When evening falls, the temperature drops to a pleasant 20 degrees – perfect for an evening stroll through Paramaribo.
Tropical rainforest and precipitation
The vast tropical rainforest that covers most of Suriname means that rain is always a possibility during your visit. This makes the country as green and lush as you will experience it. The coastal region, where most tourist activities take place, has a tropical rainforest climate with humidity ranging from 75% to 80%.
Sunshine in the capital
In Paramaribo, where many travelers begin their Surinamese adventure, the sun shines an average of 58% of the time. This provides ample opportunities to explore the colonial architecture and lively Markets.
Special weather phenomena
A unique aspect of Surinamese weather are the “sibibusies” – powerful wind gusts that can occur during thunderstorms at speeds of 70 to 100 kilometers per hour. These natural phenomena add a dramatic element to the tropical climate.
Understanding rainy periods and dry times
It is important for tourists to know that Suriname does not have traditional seasons as you may be used to. Instead, rainy periods and drier times alternate. The main rainy period runs from mid-April to mid-August – a time when the rainforest is at its most beautiful, but when you as a visitor should expect more precipitation.
Climate influences on your travel planning
Suriname’s weather is determined by the movement of the intertropical convergence zone, which shifts depending on the position of the sun. In addition, El Niño and La Niña play a role: El Niño brings drier weather every two to seven years, while La Niña brings more rain. These natural cycles can affect the timing of your visit.
No hurricanes, but intense rainfall
A reassurance for visitors: hurricanes do not occur in Suriname. However, these tropical storms can lead to periods of intense rainfall elsewhere in the region. This means that your trip will rarely be completely disrupted by extreme weather.

Suriname welcomes you as a destination that deeply impresses. Here you will experience the perfect combination of lush rainforests, fascinating colonial history and rich cultural diversity within a warm, welcoming society. (Public) transportation
Traveling through Suriname: an adventurous challenge
Transportation in Suriname is a real adventure in itself. The road network is limited and many roads are in moderate condition, making every trip an exciting undertaking. This very challenge gives your trip through this beautiful country an authentic and adventurous character.
Traffic and road conditions
In Suriname, vehicles drive on the left and traffic from the left has the right of way. Road signs are similar to those in the Netherlands, but the road network is much more limited. Outside the city, many roads are unpaved, and during rainy seasons, roads can flood or fill up with potholes. Driving at night without street lights is not recommended. For destinations deep in the rainforest, use a korjaal (traditional boat) or a domestic flight.
Cycling in Suriname
Bicycle traffic is not yet widespread among locals. In capital Paramaribo, there are hardly any bicycle lanes and cars regularly park on sidewalks. All traffic therefore shares the same lane. Several rental companies do offer bicycles, and Dutch visitors and interns in particular are fueling a growing bicycle culture.
International driving license
To drive a vehicle, you need an international driver’s license. You can obtain this from the ANWB through their website: https://www.anwb.nl/auto/rijbewijs/het-rijbewijs/internationaal-rijbewijs
Transportation options for tourists
Collective transportation: Bus-like vehicles connect larger cities and towns. These are inexpensive but can get crowded and do not always leave punctually.
Cabs: Popular in cities such as Paramaribo. Relatively affordable and can be reserved through hotels or cab companies. Always agree on a price before getting in, as meters are not always used.
Rental car: Provides maximum freedom to explore remote areas. Several rental companies operate in Paramaribo and at airports. Keep in mind that many roads outside the city are unpaved.
Water transportation: Suriname’s many rivers make boating an essential form of transportation. Passenger boats and private charters take you to remote villages, especially along the Suriname and Marowijne rivers.
An unforgettable destination
Suriname is a country that impresses. You’ll immerse yourself in vast rainforests, colonial architecture, diverse cultures and a welcoming population. From jungle expeditions to exploring Javanese, Hindu and Creole traditions – Suriname offers a pure, surprising and unspoiled travel experience.

The check-in and departure process goes smoothly thanks to the spacious layout of the terminals and experienced staff who are happy to help you with questions about your trip.
Travel to the city
From the airport, you have several options for reaching Paramaribo or other destinations. Cabs are ready at the exit and offer a comfortable ride to your hotel. Many hotels also offer shuttle services, so check with your reservation.
For more freedom, you can rent a car from one of the rental companies at the airport. This gives you the opportunity to explore Suriname at your own pace and discover the hidden gems of this fascinating country.

History
Discover the fascinating origins of Suriname’s name
When you visit Suriname, you discover a country with a rich history that begins with the name itself. This beautiful destination takes its name from the Surinen, an original Indian tribe that centuries ago lived in the vast area now known as Suriname and portions of neighboring Guyana.
A unique republic in the heart of South America
As a visitor to Suriname, you step into an extraordinary republic located on the northern coast of South America. The vibrant capital city of Paramaribo is the beating heart of this diverse country and offers tourists a perfect base from which to explore Suriname’s many treasures.
From colonial history to modern independence
During your journey through Suriname, you will walk through a country with a fascinating colonial history. The area was first under British rule from 1650 to 1667, until the Netherlands took control after the Treaty of Breda. For nearly three centuries, from 1667 to 1954, Suriname developed as a Dutch colony.
In 1954, the country gained new status as an autonomous territory within the Dutch kingdom. The culmination of this historical development came on Nov. 25, 1975, when Suriname gained its full independence and grew into the sovereign republic that visitors can experience today.
